Market’s Mood Swings & The One Strategy Pros Use to Stay Calm

Survive the swings, stack up the wins — the strategy and mindset combo you need now.

Markets feel shaky — but smart strategies hold the tower steady.

Hello, Market Mastery crew! 👋

If you’ve been keeping an eye on the markets (or even just your portfolio), you probably noticed it’s been another rollercoaster ride this week — and we’re only halfway through!

Between tariff drama and a surprise market rebound, there’s plenty to unpack.

Let’s break down what’s moving the markets, add another powerful tool to your trading playbook, and keep sharpening that all-important trader mindset.

Let’s dive in! 🚀

Today’s quiz:

Which of the following best describes a covered call strategy?

  • A) Buying a call option and buying shares of the same stock at the same time.

  • B) Selling a call option on shares you already own.

  • C) Buying a put option to protect against downside risk.

  • D) Buying both a call and a put option on the same stock.

Answer will be revealed in next newsletter!

Here’s the answer to last issue’s quiz:

What is a 'long straddle' in options trading?

Answer: C) Buying both a call and a put with the same strike price and expiration date. (Explanation: A long straddle is a strategy where you buy a call and a put option on the same stock, with the same strike price and expiration date. You’re betting that the stock will make a big move, but you’re not sure which direction — up or down. As long as the move is large enough, you can profit regardless of which way the market swings.)

Market Insight: Tariff Shock & Surprise Rebound

The week started rough, with the S&P 500 down 1.8% and the Nasdaq dropping 2.6% on Monday, thanks to new 25% tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico.

Investors were spooked by the potential economic slowdown caused by trade tensions.

Tuesday didn’t offer much relief, with all major indexes down again, wiping out post-election gains for the S&P 500.

Then came Wednesday’s plot twist — President Trump pulled back on some of his tariffs, and suddenly, the markets caught their breath. The Dow jumped 1.1%, the S&P 500 gained 1.1%, and the Nasdaq rallied 1.5%.

We’ve already covered call options, put options, and the long straddle in our previous newsletters.

Now, let’s step into income-generating territory with covered calls.

It’s a strategy where you own shares of a stock and sell a call option on those shares.

It’s great for generating extra income if you think the stock will stay flat or go up slightly — but you’re okay with selling if the stock price shoots up.

We’ve already talked about conquering fear, patience, and discipline — but there’s one mindset superpower every successful trader needs: the ability to learn from losses.

Every trader — even the pros — takes losses.

The difference?

Successful traders don’t just shrug them off or beat themselves up.

They treat each loss as a chance to improve.
